Private equity is causing serious damage to local hospitals and increasingly, specialties. At first, I didn\u2019t think this would affect me \u2014 but it did. And the truth is, it could be affecting you too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is Private Equity? (Fair question) <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Private equity<\/strong> is when investors buy companies, often using borrowed money, to try to make them more valuable and then sell them for a profit. Because their main goal is to give money back to the people who invested in them, they focus on changes that increase profits fast\u2014like cutting costs or selling parts of the company. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This can sometimes help a business grow, but it can also mean less focus on long-term quality or customer needs. And recently, private equity has been entering into the healthcare industry with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facs.org\/for-medical-professionals\/news-publications\/news-and-articles\/bulletin\/2025\/june-2025-volume-110-issue-6\/how-does-private-equity-affect-the-delivery-of-quality-care\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.facs.org\/for-medical-professionals\/news-publications\/news-and-articles\/bulletin\/2025\/june-2025-volume-110-issue-6\/how-does-private-equity-affect-the-delivery-of-quality-care\/\">over a trillion dollars invested by it in the last decade<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the past few years, these firms have quietly taken over hundreds of hospitals and clinics in the U.S.\u2014even some school health programs. And the results? Less staff. More mistakes. Higher bills. And worse care\u2014especially for teens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">So what happens when private equity owns a hospital?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1. More mistakes, less safety.<\/strong><br>One study looked at 51 hospitals. The ones bought by private equity had a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nih.gov\/news-events\/nih-research-matters\/infections-falls-increased-private-equity-owned-hospitals\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.nih.gov\/news-events\/nih-research-matters\/infections-falls-increased-private-equity-owned-hospitals\">25% jump in medical mistakes<\/a><\/strong>. That included more infections, more falls, and worse care for patients who needed surgery or emergency help. Even though the patients were sometimes healthier to begin with, they ended up worse off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. Patient satisfaction drops.<\/strong><br>People noticed. <a href=\"https:\/\/healthjournalism.org\/blog\/2025\/02\/the-latest-on-the-harms-of-private-equity-in-health-care\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/healthjournalism.org\/blog\/2025\/02\/the-latest-on-the-harms-of-private-equity-in-health-care\/\">One study<\/a> from the Journals of the American Medical Association showed that patient satisfaction dropped the longer a hospital is held by private equity, reaching as low as 5% by year 3. Many said they wouldn\u2019t recommend the hospital to friends or family as staff became slower to respond to patients\u2019 needs, especially in emergencies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3. Bills go way up.<\/strong><br>Private equity firms want to make money. So they raise prices. Sometimes they even charge for out-of-network services\u2014even if the patient is at a hospital that\u2019s supposed to be covered by their insurance. These \u201csurprise bills\u201d can cost hundreds or thousands of dollars and are especially tough on families who don\u2019t expect them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Big Changes Need to Happen<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ban secret hospital buyouts<\/strong><br>Private equity often buys hospitals quietly, then cuts staff and services to boost profits. Deals should be public and transparent so communities know who\u2019s in charge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Cap debt dumping<\/strong><br>Many PE-owned hospitals get loaded with massive debt, then collapse. Laws should limit how much debt owners can pile on before walking away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Protect essential services<\/strong><br>ERs, maternity wards, and ICUs can\u2019t just vanish because they\u2019re \u201cunprofitable.\u201d Require PE owners to keep core services running\u2014or sell to someone who will.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tie profits to patient outcomes<\/strong><br>If a hospital\u2019s quality tanks, owners shouldn\u2019t still cash out. Link executive pay and investor returns to actual patient care, not just revenue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Can I Do?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Find out how private equity affects healthcare where you live.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Choose independent or community-based providers when you can.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speak up\u2014email your representatives, join local health advocacy groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Your voice matters. Your health depends on it.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Final Thoughts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Healthcare isn\u2019t supposed to be about profits. It\u2019s about people. There are real people&#8217;s lives on the line every day, and real families worrying about them. When private equity firms take over, they put money first and patients second. That might work in a business. But it doesn\u2019t work in a hospital or clinic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And for teens\u2014who are already facing mental health struggles, stress, and questions about their bodies\u2014it can make things even harder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Everyone deserves care that\u2019s safe, affordable, and focused on well-being.
